AGING OUT
WITHOUT CONNECTIONS
Youth Aging Out Of The Foster Care System Face Life's Hurdles Alone
Youth age out of the foster care system as young as 18 – too old to be in the system
yet too young to be on their own.
Most leave without family connections, opportunities, or a support system necessary
to successfully transition to adulthood.
Many have moved from home to home and therefore from school to school,
without having created supportive networks of family or friends.
They leave without experiencing the better life promised to them as they were placed in the system.
Consider the current conditions of high housing costs and the numbers of young adults
who return home and rely on their parents and family members, financially and emotionally.
Youth who have aged out of the foster care system do not have that option.

ADDRESSING HOMELESSNESS IS KEY
Without a place to call home our vulnerable youth face:
-
Safety Issues of living on the streets and in shelters
-
Stress – working daily to find a place to sleep each night, isolation, having no one to turn to
-
Couch Surfing – often leading to unsafe situations
-
Food Insecurity – where will the next meal come from? How do I prepare or store food?
-
Where do I keep my stuff?
-
Where can I shower? Sleep? Study?
-
How do I show up clean, prepared to do my best at work? At school?
-
How do I receive mail?
-
How do I spend my free time? Where?
-
Health and emotional well being.
